Technique for Releasing Difficult Emotions (excerpted from The Pain Companion)
Physical pain has a way of taking over not only our body, but our emotional life as well. Allowing ourselves to feel and move through the intense emotions that accompany living with chronic pain, such as sadness, guilt, anger, and shame, serves to create more emotional space and the resiliency needed for living with physical pain and, ultimately, for easing that pain.
The technique below can be used any time you feel strong, difficult, or unexpected emotions arise. Take it slow, and be kind to yourself as you move through the exercise. Remember to keep breathing!
